Lt. Col. Lynn Richard Channell, retired, born June 2, 1920, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 5:30AM. Lynn was born on June 2, 1920 to Mr. Ignatius Humboldt Channell and Estaline Hammond Channell in Huttonsville, WV. He graduated from Tygart Valley High School in 1937 and attended West Virginia Wesleyan where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. During World War II, he served in the US Army Air Force in the Pacific as a member of the 54th Troop Carrier Wing, 5th Air Force, where he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, Philippines, Okinawa and Atsugi, Japan. He was honorably discharged in late 1945 as a Tech Sgt. After the war, he attended West Virginia University where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in 1950.
In late 1950 at the start of the Korean Conflict, he joined the US Air Force as an officer. He served in the Air Force as a Bio-Environmental Engineer until his retirement in 1978 as a Lt. Col. He was stationed in Massachusetts, France, Alaska, California and the Philippines. While in the service, he graduated with a Masters from John Hopkins University.
On June 8, 1953, Lt. Lynn Channell married Lt. Kathryn Mehalick in Chateauroux, France. They had three sons.
In 1978 Lynn retired from the Air Force to the family home in Huttonsville, the house in which he was born. He was an active member of the community serving as Mayor of Huttonsville and as Chairman of the Board of the Huttonsville Public Service District. In 2007, the PSD honored Mr. Channell by naming their administrative office building in Mill Creek after him. He was a member at large of Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 14000 and was a member of H.W, Daniels Post 29 American Legion.
Surviving is his wife, Kathryn Mehalick Channell of Camarillo, CA; his sons Jeff Channell of San Diego CA, Charles Channell of Redondo Beach CA and Scott Channell of Westchester, CA; by three sisters, Mary Pfost of Dunedin Florida, Majel Palandech of Rolling Hills Estates CA and Helen Nichols of Summersville WV and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, William (Nick) and Bonn.
Friends may call from 10:00 AM until 12:00 noon Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. At 12:00 noon, Mr. Channell will then be moved to the Brick Church Cemetery where a graveside service will be held. Rev. Bernard Teter will officiate and interment will follow. Full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite be members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
