Elden E. Simmons, age 83 years, a resident of Rt. 3, Elkins, passed away at 11:00 P.M., Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Care Unit in Elkins. He was born November 8, 1925 at Elkins, a son of the late George Washington Simmons and Anna May Swecker Simmons. On January 22, 1972, at Elkins, he was married to the former Lois Lee Paugh Steyer, who survives at Elkins. Also surviving is one son, Gary L. Simmons and wife Bonnie Stalnaker Simmons of Beverly, one step-son, Donald Steyer of Oakland, MD and two daughters, Diana Brown and husband Scott and Darlene Shaulis and husband Randy, all of Phoenix, AZ., three brothers, Carl Simmons, Clyde Simmons and wife Naomi and Fred Simmons and wife Geraldine, all of Elkins, one sister, Georgie Shiflett and husband Paul of Elkins and six grandchildren; Derek, Jason and Christi Brown, all of Arizona, Marc Simmons of Clarksburg and Cierra and Kelsey Shaulis of Arizona.
Also preceding him in death was one son, Roger Earl Simmons, one brother, Wilson Simmons and one sister, Mary Simmons.
Mr. Simmons worked as a car man and welder with the Western Maryland Railroad from May 4, 1950 until his retirement on August 13, 1985. He was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F. and A.M. and Knights Templar. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son Gary and grandson Marc. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 1st from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Barry R. Moll officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens where Elkins Lodge No. 108 A.F. and A.M. will conduct Masonic Graveside Rites. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520.
