Georgetta Carr Hammonds, age 85 years, a resident of Summersville, WV, passed away Monday, October 19, 2009 in the Summersville Memorial Hospital. She was born December 30, 1923 in Elkins,a daughter of the late Solomon Carr and Stella White Carr. On December 24, 1943 at Elkins, she was married to Pat Hammonds, who preceded her in death on November 10, 1979. She is survived by one son, Kermit “Red Eye” Hammonds of Leivasy, WV and two daughters, Patricia Hammonds Lawson and husband Tom of Summersville and Wanda Hammonds Beaver and husband Arthur of Amelia, VA. Also surviving are two brothers, Solomon and Curtis Carr, both of Elkins, two sisters, Sylvia Carr and Irene Carr Coffman, both of Elkins, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were two sisters, Virginia “Leafy” Lewis and Opal Carr Brake and five brothers, Norman, Arthur, Leonard, Raymond and Clarence “Todd” Carr.
Mrs. Hammonds was a homemaker who loved to garden. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family. She was a friend to everyone she knew and had a love for animals. She was a Methodist by faith.
Friends may call from 12:00 noon until 1:30 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday from the funeral home chapel. Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate and interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman.
