Maida Evangeline Chewning, age 87 years, a resident of Fisher, WV and a former resident of Mabie, passed away Wednesday evening, October 21, 2009 in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She was born January 19, 1922 at Cassity, WV, a daughter of the late Leslie D. Simmons & Ivy Zickefoose Simmons. She was married to Gerald Chewning who preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Gerald Chewning & wife Dorothy, of Butler, TN. Four daughters, Anna Bobo & husband Bob, of Fisher, WV, Nancy Haggerty & husband Bill, of Purgitsville, WV, Cathy Carr & husband Bub, of Moorefield, Sandy Carriger & husband Casey, also of Moorefield. Also surviving is one son in law, Ronald McCollam, of Mabie, one brother, Paul Simmons, of Buckhannon and one sister, Iris Zirkle, of Mabie. Seventeen grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren and one step great great grandson. Also preceding her in death were one infant son, Theodore Rodney Chewning, one daughter, Judy McCollam, four brothers, one sister and one grandson Michael.
Mrs. Chewning was a homemaker .
Friends may call from12:00 noon until 3:00 PM Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Carl Cutright and Pastor Chris Whetzel officiating. Interment will follow in the Rowan Memorial Cemetery at Mabie. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2428 Kanawha Blvd., Charleston, WV 43216-3549 in memory of Mrs. Chewning. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Chewning will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Believers Victory Center at Moorefield, WV.
