Boyd Lynn Phillips, age 70 years, a resident of Rt. 4 Elkins, the Airport Road, passed away at 2:28 AM Monday, October 26, 2009 at his home. He was born July 16, 1939 at Elkins a son of the late Chester A. and Creta Evelyn Summerfield Phillips. On May 3, 1964 in Oakland, MD, he was married to Lillian Irene Daft Shelton who preceded him in death on August 23, 2007. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Robert L. (Wilma) Miller, Elkins and Mrs. William Paul (Anna Ruth) Stalnaker of Buckhannon. Four brothers, William A. Phillips and wife Glenna, Kenneth Lloyd Phillips and wife Shelia and Allen D. Phillips all of Elkins, Calvin E. Phillips and wife Shirley, Huntington, WV and sister-in-law, Helen L. Phillips of the Chenoweth Creek Community, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive.
One brother, Dorman C. Phillips and one sister, Clara Burnida Phillips, two great nephews and one great niece also preceded him in death. His extended family includes: Jerry Shelton, Beverly, Bobby Shelton, PA., Sandra Brown, Ohio, Gloria Miller and Janet Skidmore of Elkins, Dorothy Durante, PA and Kathy Moore of Belington.
Boyd attended the schools of Randolph County and worked for Central West Virginia Aging Services, Inc. prior to becoming unable to work last year. He had battled cancer for the past five years. He was a well known West Virginia Fiddle Player. He began playing the fiddle at the age of 13. His father bought him a Czech Fiddle purchased thru the Randolph County School System at the age of 15 which he played until the time of his death. In the 1950’s he was in many local contests along the east coast of the United States and continued to play for Augusta, WV Tours and was a frequent guest of the Vandalia Festival in Charleston, WV. He enjoyed performing tremendously for others. He loved the Lord and was a Christian by Faith.
Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 28th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Memorial Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Elkins, 412 Randolph Ave. Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Phillips.
