Obituary:
Nina C. Summerfield, age 87 years, a resident of Montrose and since May 2009, a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center, passed away Sunday morning, November 1, 2009 in the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Nina was born June 3, 1922 at Glady, a daughter of the late Letcher C. and Hassie Susan Arbogast Rexrode. She was married to Allen E. Vandevender who preceded her in death on September 2, 1954. On May 29, 1970 she married Raymond E. “Dutch” Summerfield who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Diane Coberly and husband Dave; four sons, Ralph Vandevender and wife Faye, Roger Vandevender and wife Alice, Richard Vandevender and wife Merrill and Wayne Vandevender. Surviving grandchildren include Greggory Vandevender and wife Lynn, Craig Vandevender and wife Elizabeth, Rodney Vandevender and companion Roberta, Teresa Orndorff, Christopher Vandevender and wife Beth, Kent Vandevender and wife Vicki, Rochelle Chenoweth and husband Derek and step-granddaughter, Teresa Coberly. Surviving great-grandchildren include Justin Vandevender, Jarrett Vandevender and wife Heather, Alexis Rae Orndorff, Shaylen and Sienna Chenoweth, Rodney II and Todd Vandevender, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Summerfield had worked for the Family Health Services for several years, as well as a cook at the Kerens Grade School. She was a member of the Israel United Methodist Church and the Pleasant Grove Rebekah Lodge No. 98 I.O.O.F. of Montrose. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family, friends and life. Nina was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by four sisters, Maple Richardson, Virginia M. Rhodes, Betty L. Rhodes and Norma Jean Kelly and three brothers, Russell, William and Johnny Rexrode. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Kevin Gainer officiating. Interment will follow in the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Airport Road.
