George D. “Red” Stalnaker, age 81 years, a resident of the Hazelwood Community, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center from complications following a stroke on November 21, 2009. He was born December 15, 1928 at Elkins, a son of the late Forest and Mary Katherine Gibson Stalnaker. He is survived by his wife, Helen Rhodes Stalnaker whom he married on December 30, 1950. Also surviving are sister-in-laws, Phyllis Pingley & husband Owen, and Mary Rose Stalnaker of Fairmont. Nephews, Richard Pyles & wife Virginia of Elkins, Marian Pyles & wife Betty of Cold Spring, KY, Edward Stalnaker & wife Linda of Fairmont, and Michael Stalnaker & wife Pam of Fairmont. Nieces, Luwana Smith & husband Jim, of Elkins, Peggy Hamrick & husband Don of Fairmont, Geneva Walters of Canton, OH, Linda Joseph & husband Pete of Hilton Head, SC and Pam DeFazio & husband John of Stevenville, TX. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Forrest R. “Bud” Stalnaker & two sisters, Evelyn Lee & Mary Barr.
George was a 1946 graduate of Elkins High School and a member of the football team which he was very proud of. In 1945, he had worked in the Cryptographics Material Branch of the United States Government Signal Security Agency in Arlington, VA. In 1946, he served in the United States Merchant Marines and from 1950 to 1954, he served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Pocono & the U.S.S. Tacowic. Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Davis & Elkins College while starting M & S Auto Supply. He had also owned Custom Auto Trim and Seneca Tire. Red loved fishing, camping, gardening & working in the yard. He was a former member of Woodford Memorial Methodist Church, the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department and the Randolph County Senior Center.
Friends may call from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Sunday, January 3, 2010 from the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Peter A. Vial officiating. Interment will follow at Elkins Memorial Gardens where the presentation of the American flag will be presented by H. W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 135, Beverly, WV 26253 in memory of Mr. Stalnaker.
