| Obituary: |
Richard Eugene Shipman, of the Hazelwood Community in Elkins, has gone home to our Father in Heaven on the 11th day of February, 2010. “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2:17 The New King James Version. Richard had been a Sunday School Teacher and Biblical Historian for over fifty years, having established and mentored The Shipman Bible Class as a member of Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church. He considered class members as part of his extended family and spent many hours preparing each lesson.
Richard retired from Kroger in 1985 as Head Dairy Clerk; a hard-working employee and Union member of thirty-seven years. Afterward he remained active in the Elkins community through his work mowing lawns for those who could not mow for themselves, delivering Meals on Wheels, and as a substitute van driver and custodian for the Randolph County Senior Center.
Richard was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, where he served as a cook from 1945 to 1947. He graduated from Tygart Valley High School in 1946.
Richard was born in Norton, WV, on April 29, 1927, a son of the late Paul and Jessie Shipman. His father was a coal miner who died in a motor-vehicle-accident when Richard was only eight years old; an event that would forever influence his life. He is survived by his sister Betty Mairs and husband Max of Wooster, OH. Preceding him in passing were sisters, Doris White, Pauline Cave, LaVonne Shipman, and brother, James Shipman.
Richard was united in marriage on February 15, 1953 to the former Vonda Lavere Eskew, who survives in Elkins; Monday would have marked their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary. The two were blessed with children Wanda Shipman, of Fredrick, MD; Donna Saunders and husband Kenneth, of Franklinton, NC; Edward Shipman and wife Cathy, of Tampa, FL and John Shipman, of Beverly, WV. Grandchildren, April Shrader, Andy Sponaugle, Adam Sponaugle, Catherine Saunders, Christine Buchanon, Mitch Shipman, Jason Shipman, David Jarvis, Brenna Shipman, Kaden Shipman and great grandchildren, Kevin Shrader, Jr., Randall Shrader, Matthew Shrader, Emma Buchanon, Tyler Sponaugle, Peyton Sponaugle, and Caden Sponaugle.
Richard’s bright smile will shine on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends who will remember him always as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and compassionate friend.
Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, February 15th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow at Elkins Memorial Gardens, Airport Road, Elkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, 113 First Street, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Shipman.
