Obituary:
Mr. Maurice Clinton Crawford, Sr., a resident of the Kingsville Community for the past sixty years, left his earthly home on Monday afternoon, February 15, 2010 with his family by his side. Maurice was born in Mill Creek, WV on February 3, 1918, and had recently celebrated his ninety second birthday. His parents were the late Plummer and Flossie Phares Crawford. In his early years, Maurice was a carpenter and woodworking later became a hobby. He was proud of his service in the United States Army during World War II. Maurice was part of Company B, the 138th Engineering Battalion and was involved in several European operations preparing for troop movement and restoring war damaged areas. Maurice retired from the West Virginia ABC Commission in 1980. After his retirement, Maurice spent his time growing plants and was well known for his gardening and the large tomatoes that he grew. Maurice loved gardening, but referred to his family as the flowers in his garden. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, the former Alma L. Thompson and seven children. Daughters, Carolyn Sue Ricottilli, of the Kingsville Community, Sharon Kay George and husband Donald, of Buckhannon, Linda Darlene Shreve, of the Talbott Community, Deborah Jeanne Hardy and husband Eddie, of Elkview, WV and Kathryn Faye Lock and husband Michael, of Elkins and sons, Maurice C. Crawford, Jr., and wife Sandra, of the Talbott Community and Dennis Bryan Crawford and wife Lisa, of Elkins. Maurice will be remembered with love by twelve grandchildren; Anthony Ricottilli and wife Shelley, Jeff Ricottilli and wife Brandi, SSgt. Wayne Ricottilli of the United States Marine Corp and wife Erin, Mark George and wife Candy, Kelli Marsh and husband Jay, Angela George, a student at WVU, Connie Williams and husband Jimmy, Melissa Kennedy and husband Alan, Jason Hardy and wife Kelly, Eric Lock and wife Dalsey and Wesley and Caleb Crawford. Fourteen great grandchildren; Deven, Kaeli, Celia, Katelyn and Chloe Ricottilli, Brandon and Corbin George, Morgan and Ryli Marsh, Dustin and Brianna Williams, Haley Kennedy, Alex Lock, and Emily Mearns. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson and Delores Crawford, brother-in-law, Robert Ward and several nieces and nephews. Maurice was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by brothers, Wilson B. and Ivan Neil Crawford and sisters, Genevieve Saubourn, Unita Armstrong, Joanne Ward and infant Bonna Lee. Maurice was a member of the Talbott United Methodist Church and H.W. Daniels Post 29, American Legion. Friends may call from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, February 19th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Gary Rapking and Pastor Ken Shiflet officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded at the gravesite by members of H. W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial contributions may be made to the Talbott United Methodist Church, RR01 Box 109, Belington, WV 26250 or to the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL BLVD.
