Brenda J. Cogar

Brenda J. Cogar, age 70 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2021. She was born July 11, 1951 at Pocahontas County, WV, a daughter of the late Russell P. and Bertha Tipton Madison. She was raised by her foster parents, the late Geneva and Daniel “Dan” Church. On April 15, 1998 she married Delmas “Del” Cogar who preceded her in death February 11, 2018. She is survived by two foster brothers, Charles Church and Linda of Elkins and Dale Church and Peggy of Cary, North Carolina; foster sister, Margaret Joan Lunsford of Elkins and foster sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Church of Nevada. Several nieces and nephews including, two special nieces, Cristy Keiser and husband Jack of Indiana and Dana Burke and husband Zach of Bowden, WV. Preston Madison and Peggy Smailes of WV, James Madison of Pennsylvania and her best friend, Barbara Souter-Whipple of New Mexico. Also preceding her in death was one foster sister, Carolyn Patrick Roy; two foster brothers, Harold Church and wife Elizabeth and Robert Church; and foster brother-in-law, Robert Lunsford and Edmond “Elwood” Madison. Brenda was a graduate of Fairmont State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught current events, history and social studies for thirty years at Phillip Barbour High School prior to her retirement. Friends may call from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mike Boggs officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens. Masks and social distancing are recommended for those attending the services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, P. O.
