Earl Lee "Duck" Grimm Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Earl Lee “Duck” Grimm, age 85 years, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 in the Hospice Care Unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born August 31, 1929 in Elkins, a son of the late Earl Gordon Grimm and Louise Herron Grimm. On August 7, 1948 in the District of Columbia, he was married to Sylvia June Chewning Grimm who survives in Philippi. Also surviving is one son, Benton Lee Grimm of Aquasco, MD and two daughters, Frankie Earlene Archibald and husband Joe of Philippi and Tensel Marie Leach and husband Leon of New Ulm, TX. Five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren also survive. He was a member of the Mountain Top Hunting Club of Davis, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Fraternal Order of Police of Prince George County, Maryland. “Duck” divided his school year, having spent his early years in Elkins. When he was 9 years old, he moved to Washington, D.C. and attended school there until he moved back to Elkins at the age of 15, where he attended Elkins High School. There he played basketball, made all state in football and was inducted into the Randolph County Athletic Hall of Fame. In his twenties, “Duck” drove stock cars. He was one of the first drivers at the Kerens Race Track. His lifetime passion was hunting and hand loading. He was an avid shooter. He was instrumental in preserving the Elkins High School name, mascot and colors. “Duck” moved his family to Maryland in 1954. In 1956 he became a Prince George County police officer. After retirement, “Duck” and June moved back to West Virginia and resided at Kerens, WV. In 2011, they moved to Philippi where they resided until his death on August 28th. He would have turned 86 on August 31st, Happy Birthday Dad! Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 2nd from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Downing Gregory officiating. Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery in Elkins. It was “Duck’s” request that memorial contributions be made to Wimer Stadium, C/O Elkins High School, 100 Kennedy Drive, Elkins, WV 26241 in his memory.
